Electrical fault finding and emergency call-outs in the Cotswolds
If you smell burning or see smoke from electrics, turn off the main switch if it is safe. Leave, and call 999 if there is fire. For a power cut, call 105. For trips and dead circuits, an electrician finds the fault with tests. This page lists Cotswold firms that do fault finding.

What to do first
First, decide if the problem is in your home or in the network. If your neighbours have no power too, it is a power cut. Call 105, the free power cut number, or check your network operator's website.
If only your home is off, look at the consumer unit. A switch in the down position shows which device tripped.
If you see smoke, sparks or scorch marks, or you smell burning, do not reset anything. Turn off the main switch only if you can reach it safely and your hands are dry. Leave the building and call 999 if there is fire.
What fault finding involves
Fault finding is testing to find the cause of a problem. The electrician isolates circuits one at a time and tests the insulation, the earth and the connections.
Common causes are a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor light or socket, a nail or screw through a cable, or a loose connection. Some faults appear only at certain times, such as at night when a heater or pump switches on. These can take more than one visit.
Local factors in the Cotswolds
Rural Cotswold homes often have outbuildings, garden lights and pumps on long cable runs. Damp and rodents can damage these cables.
Many homes have overhead supplies, which storms can damage. National Grid Electricity Distribution covers most of Gloucestershire, and SSEN covers most of Oxfordshire. The 105 number connects you to the right one.
If your home floods, do not touch the electrics. Ask an electrician to inspect them before anyone turns the power back on.
Signs you need an electrician
Call an electrician if a fault comes back after you reset it. Other signs are below.
- An RCD or breaker trips again with nothing plugged in.
- Lights flicker or dim when other appliances switch on.
- Sockets, switches or plugs are hot, scorched or buzzing.
- You get a tingle from a tap, a metal fitting or an appliance.
- Part of the house has no power and no device has tripped.
The rules
Repairs and like-for-like replacements are not notifiable under Part P. But a repair that adds a new circuit or replaces the consumer unit is notifiable. Work near a bath or shower can be notifiable too.
All repairs must meet BS 7671. For small jobs, the electrician gives you a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. For notifiable work, you get an Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations compliance certificate.
If you are a landlord, a fault can make the home unsafe under the 2020 rules. Fix it quickly and keep the paperwork.
What to ask a firm
Ask about the call-out charge and the hourly rate before the electrician comes. These questions help.
- Do you charge a call-out fee, and what does it include?
- What are your rates out of hours, at weekends and on bank holidays?
- Will you make the installation safe today, and quote for any repair later?
- Are you registered with a scheme, so you can certify notifiable work?
Questions
Who do I call in a power cut?
Call 105. It is free and connects you to your local network operator. If someone in your home depends on electrical medical equipment, ask the operator about its priority services register.
Is it safe to reset a trip switch?
It is usually safe to push a tripped switch back up once. If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician. Never reset it if you see damage or smell burning.
Do Cotswold electricians work out of hours?
Some do. Look for the emergency call-out tag in our listings, and ask each firm about its hours and rates.
