Lighting, sockets and outdoor power in the Cotswolds
Electricians add lights, sockets, garden power and smart controls. Many small changes to existing circuits are not notifiable under Part P. A new circuit, such as power to a garden office, is notifiable, and so is most work near a bath or shower. This page explains the work and lists Cotswold firms that do it.

What the work involves
Small jobs add a socket or a light to an existing circuit. The electrician checks that the circuit can take the extra load and has RCD protection.
Bigger jobs add a new circuit. Examples are power to a garden office or workshop, outdoor lighting on a timer, or a new kitchen circuit. Outdoor cables must be the right type, buried at a safe depth or fixed and protected.
Smart controls replace switches, sockets or thermostats with devices you control from an app. Some smart switches need a neutral wire at the switch, which many older homes do not have.
Local factors in the Cotswolds
Cotswold gardens often have stone walls, outbuildings and long paths. Cable routes across these can need trenching or fixings into stone.
Much of the area is in the Cotswolds National Landscape, where dark night skies are valued. Choose shielded outdoor lights that point down, and use timers or sensors.
Listed buildings and conservation areas can limit lights or fittings on the outside of a building. Check with your council planning team before you fix anything to a listed wall.
Signs you need an electrician
You need an electrician if you use extension leads all the time. Other signs are below.
- You plan power to a shed, garden room, pond pump or gate.
- Outdoor lights or sockets trip the RCD after rain.
- You want lights or a fan in a bathroom.
- Your smart switches will not work because there is no neutral.
The rules
Part P of the Building Regulations covers all fixed electrical work in homes in England. Only some of it is notifiable. Notifiable work is a new circuit, a new consumer unit, or any addition or alteration in the space around a bath or shower.
An extra socket or light on an existing circuit in a kitchen, hall or garden is not notifiable. It must still meet BS 7671, and you should get a Minor Works certificate.
BS 7671 requires RCD protection for most sockets, for cables buried in walls at shallow depth, and for outdoor equipment.
For notifiable work, a registered electrician can self-certify it. You get a Building Regulations compliance certificate within 30 days.
What to ask a firm
Ask the firm to tell you if the job is notifiable, and what certificate you will get.
- Is this work notifiable, and are you registered to self-certify it?
- What cable and route will you use outdoors? How deep will you bury it?
- Does my circuit have RCD protection, or do I need an upgrade?
- Which smart devices do you fit, and do they suit my wiring?
Questions
Can I fit an outdoor socket myself?
Outdoor work has a higher risk of shock. Use a registered electrician. If it needs a new circuit, it is notifiable under Part P.
Do I need a certificate for one extra socket?
The work is usually not notifiable. But the electrician should still test it and give you a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.
Why do my garden lights trip the power when it rains?
Water is probably getting into a fitting, a joint or a damaged cable. The RCD trips to protect you. Ask an electrician to test the circuit.
