How much does an EICR cost in the Cotswolds?
Two local firms publish EICR prices. One in Stroud starts from £120. One in Witney starts from £290 plus VAT for a house of up to 3 bedrooms. A national cost survey puts a 2 to 3 bedroom house at £150 to £250. Repairs are extra. Prices vary; get at least three written quotes.
What local firms charge for an EICR
Local published prices start at about £120 and go up with the size of the home. We found two firms in our area that publish an EICR price on their own website. Most local firms do not publish a price. They quote after they know the size and age of the home.
A "from" price is the lowest price. A large or old installation costs more. Check if the price includes VAT. Some prices on this page are "plus VAT", so add 20% if the firm is VAT-registered.

What makes an EICR cost more in the Cotswolds
The number of circuits and boards sets most of the price. Each circuit needs tests, so a large house takes longer than a flat. A home with storage heaters often has a second, off-peak board. The Witney firm above charges extra for that board.
Old wiring takes longer to test. Many Cotswold cottages have wiring from several decades, added in stages. The electrician must find every circuit and record what is there. Some old circuits have no earth wire, which leads to more codes on the report.
Outbuildings add time. Barns, garages, workshops and garden rooms often have their own supply from the house. Each one needs a visual check and tests.
Travel between villages can add cost. Some firms charge by the hour from the time they leave base. For example, the Witney firm charges its hourly rate from the start of travel. A firm close to you may cost less for a small job.
Thick stone walls and listed status do not change the test much. But they can make any repairs cost more, because new cables are harder to run.
Repairs found by the EICR cost extra
The EICR price covers the inspection and the report, not the repairs. If the report gives a C1 or C2 code, the work to fix it is a separate job. Ask for a written price for each repair. You can use a different registered electrician for the repairs.
Landlords in England must have the electrics checked at least every 5 years. GOV.UK has the full rules for the private and social rented sectors. Our landlord EICR guide explains them in plain words.
How to compare EICR quotes
Prices vary; get at least three written quotes. Give each firm the same facts: the number of bedrooms, the age of the wiring, the number of boards, and any outbuildings.
- Ask if the price includes VAT.
- Ask if the price covers every circuit or only a sample.
- Ask if travel time is charged.
- Ask how much small repairs cost on the day, such as a missing blanking plate.
- Check that the firm is on a register such as NICEIC or NAPIT.
Questions
Is a cheap EICR a problem?
Not always. But a very low price can mean a rushed test or a sample of circuits only. Ask what the price covers. Ask for a sample report.
How long does an EICR take?
A national cost survey says a typical EICR takes 2 to 4 hours. A large or old house takes longer. Ask the firm for an estimate before the visit.
Does the price include VAT?
Check each quote. Some local firms show prices plus VAT. Others show prices with VAT included, or do not say.
