Home EV charger installation in the Cotswolds
A home EV charger needs its own circuit from the consumer unit, a safe earthing set-up and a smart charger. The installer must check your supply can take the load. Renters and flat owners may get an OZEV grant until March 2027. This page explains the job and lists Cotswold firms that fit chargers.

What an EV charger installation involves
The installer first checks your supply, your main fuse and your consumer unit. They work out if the house can take the extra load.
They then run a new circuit to the charger, fit the charger on a wall or post, and set up its app or network link. Most jobs take half a day to a day.
The installer tells the local network operator about the new charger. If your supply is too small, the network operator may need to upgrade it first.
Local factors in the Cotswolds
Many Cotswold homes have long drives, detached garages or parking across a lane. Long cable runs cost more and may need a larger cable.
Some older terraces share a 'looped' supply with a neighbour. The network operator may need to split the supply before a charger goes in.
Rural homes often have overhead supplies. Some have a TT earth with their own rod. The installer must choose an earthing set-up that is safe outdoors. Many chargers now have built-in protection for this.
National Grid Electricity Distribution serves most of Gloucestershire. SSEN serves most of Oxfordshire. Check your network operator by postcode.
Signs you are ready for a charger
You are ready if you have off-street parking and you charge at home most nights. Other points are below.
- Your consumer unit has a spare way, or you plan an upgrade anyway.
- You have a legal right to use the parking space.
- If you rent or own a flat, you have written permission from the landlord or freeholder.
- You want to use a cheaper overnight tariff.
The rules
A new charger circuit is notifiable under Part P. A registered electrician can self-certify the work. You get an Electrical Installation Certificate, and a Building Regulations compliance certificate within 30 days.
BS 7671 has a section on EV charging. It sets rules for RCD protection and for earthing outdoors.
The Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021 apply to home chargers sold in Great Britain since 30 June 2022. The charger must be smart, keep working if the network link fails, and have default off-peak charging hours. You can change or remove those hours.
The OZEV grant for renters and flat owners pays up to £500 towards one socket. It is open until 31 March 2027. You must use an OZEV-authorised installer, and you must not fit the charger before OZEV confirms you are eligible.
What to ask a firm
Ask each firm to survey the site before it gives a firm price.
- Are you OZEV-authorised, if I plan to claim the grant?
- Will you check my main fuse and tell the network operator?
- How will you deal with the earthing at my home?
- Does the price include the cable run, any groundwork and a consumer unit change?
- Which chargers do you fit, and do they meet the smart charge point rules?
Questions
Can I use a 3-pin plug instead of a charger?
A standard socket is not made for a heavy load for many hours every night. Old sockets and cables can overheat. Ask an electrician to test the socket and circuit before you rely on it.
Do I need planning permission for a charger?
Many home chargers are permitted development, but limits apply. Listed buildings and conservation areas can need consent. Check with your council before you book.
Is the OZEV grant still open?
Yes, at the date we checked. GOV.UK says it is open until 31 March 2027. The government can end or change it with about 4 weeks' notice.
