How much does it cost to install an EV charger in the Cotswolds?
A Stroud firm publishes fitted prices from £949 to £1,099, including VAT, for common 7kW chargers. A national cost survey gives £750 to £1,300. Renters and flat owners can get a grant of up to £500. Long cable runs and digging cost extra. Prices vary; get at least three written quotes.

The government grant
The grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, for renters and flat owners with off-street parking. A second grant helps homes with only on-street parking, if they fit a permanent cross-pavement channel. Both grants close on 31 March 2027.
People who own a house with a driveway cannot get the household grant. You apply first. You must not fit the charger before OZEV confirms that you are eligible. You must use an OZEV-authorised installer. The installer claims the grant and takes it off your invoice.
| Grant | Who can apply | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Renters and flat owners | You rent any home, or own and live in a flat, and have private off-street parking | 75% of the cost, up to £500 |
| Households with on-street parking | You own or rent your home, have only on-street parking, and fit a permanent cross-pavement solution | 75% of the cost, up to £500 |
| Landlords | Private and social landlords, and agents for them | Up to £500 per socket, up to 200 sockets |

What adds to the cost in the Cotswolds
Off-street parking decides most of the cost. Many Cotswold cottages open straight onto the street and have no drive. Without off-street parking, you need a cross-pavement channel and permission from the county council as highway authority.
Distance from the consumer unit adds cost. If the parking space is far from the house, the cable must go further. Digging a trench across gravel, stone paving or a lawn costs extra.
Thick stone walls take longer to drill. A cable through a solid stone wall needs care, and some routes are not possible.
The house supply may need work. The installer checks the main fuse, the earthing and the consumer unit. A full or old consumer unit may need an upgrade first. The installer must also tell your network operator about the charger.
Listed buildings and conservation areas need a check first. Ask the council before you fix a charger to a listed building or a wall that faces the street.
Travel between villages adds less to this job than to small repairs, but ask if it is in the price.
How to compare quotes
Prices vary; get at least three written quotes. Send each firm photos of the consumer unit, the meter and the parking space. Say how far the space is from the house.
- Ask how many metres of cable the price includes.
- Ask if digging or ducting is in the price.
- Ask if the price includes the network operator notice.
- Check that the firm is an OZEV-authorised installer if you want the grant.
- Ask if the price includes VAT.
Questions
Can I get the grant if I own a house with a drive?
No. GOV.UK says the household grant is not for people who own and live in a house. It is for renters, flat owners and homes with only on-street parking.
Can I run a cable across the pavement to my car?
Not on your own. A cable across the pavement is a trip hazard. The on-street grant needs a permanent cross-pavement solution that the highway authority agrees to.
Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?
Not always. The installer checks if your unit has space and the right protection. An old or full unit may need an upgrade, which costs extra.
