Short answer
Electricians in Cirencester work on a wide mix of homes, from listed wool-merchant houses in the centre to new estates on the edge of town. Old stone houses need careful cable routes and, if listed, advice from the council. SSEN runs the local power network, and 105 is the number to call in a power cut.

What kind of homes do Cirencester electricians work on?
Cirencester electricians work on homes of almost every age, so a wiring job can change a lot from one street to the next. Wealthy wool merchants built stone houses in and around Coxwell Street and Dollar Street, and many of them still stand.
Watermoor and the streets south of the centre have many Victorian and Edwardian houses. Their timber floors usually make new cable runs easier than in solid stone.
In older homes, look out for an old fuse box, rubber or fabric cable, and lighting circuits with no earth wire. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) shows which circuits are safe to keep.
New homes on the south-west edge of the town near Chesterton have modern wiring. Jobs there are more often an EV charger, extra sockets or a garden circuit.
Do I need consent for electrical work on a listed building in Cirencester?
You may need listed building consent, even for work inside the house. Cotswold District Council says that consent covers the interior as well as the exterior of a listed building.
The council map shows four conservation areas in the town: Town Centre, The Park, South, and Gloucester Street and River Walk. In these areas, items on a front wall need more thought. Examples are surface cable runs, outside lights and a wall charger.
Search the Historic England list to see if your house is listed. Then ask the council before the electrician starts.
How many Cirencester homes are rented?
Just under 1 in 5 households in Cirencester rents privately. In the 2021 Census, 1,711 of the 9,246 households in the 8 Cirencester wards rented from a private landlord. That is 18.5 per cent, against 20.5 per cent for England.
The share was higher in Abbey ward (22.2 per cent) and Watermoor ward (21.2 per cent). The Royal Agricultural University is in the town, and student lets add to the demand.
Under the 2020 regulations, a private landlord in England needs an EICR at least every 5 years. This makes landlord testing a large part of the work for local firms.
Who runs the power network in Cirencester?
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) runs the network in Cirencester, Siddington and South Cerney. The boundary with National Grid Electricity Distribution is a few kilometres west of the town, and Kemble is on the National Grid side.
You do not need to know your operator in a power cut. Ring 105 free from any phone, and the call reaches the right one.
Cotswold District Council says it has put public EV chargers in five of its car parks. Its car park pages do not name the sites, so check a charging map before you rely on one.
This page also covers Stratton, Baunton, Preston, Siddington, South Cerney and Ampney Crucis.
Questions
Who do I call in a power cut in Cirencester?
Call 105. It is free, and it connects you to SSEN, which runs the network in the town. Use the same number to report a fallen cable or a damaged substation.
Is my Cirencester house in a conservation area?
Check the conservation area maps on the Cotswold District Council website. The town has four. If your house is also listed, ask the council before any visible electrical work.
Do student lets in Cirencester need an EICR?
Yes, if the student has a private tenancy. The landlord needs a new report at least every 5 years. A licensed HMO can also have extra council conditions.
Does an old stone house always need a full rewire?
Not always. An EICR shows which circuits are sound and which are not. Some old houses need only a partial rewire.
